Dual Language
Dual language programming fosters bilingualism, biliteracy, enhanced awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in English and Spanish.
What is Dual Language Education?
- Integrates native English speakers and native Spanish language (Spanish) for academic literacy and content instruction through both languages.
- Instruction is provided in English and a partner language (Spanish) over an extended period of time.
- Dual language programming provides a unique and powerful opportunity to strengthen children’s highest cognitive brain potential.
Who Can Register For The Dual Language Program?
Entry into the Dual Language program is available to the following students:
- Newly registered kindergarten students
- Newly registered students in grades K-5 who are transferring from another school's Dual Language program.
What is Dual Language Education?
Dual Language programming is available in each grade level throughout the school district.
Dual Language pathway by grade level:
Pre-K: Lakeview Elementary
Kindergarten - Grade 2: East Elementary
Grades 3-4: West Elementary
Grades 5-6: Shiloh Park Intermediate
Grdes 7-8: ZIon Central Middle School
AAPPL (ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages
Eligible Multilingual Learner (ML) and Dual Language students have the opportunity to participate in the AAPPL, a nationally recognized language proficiency assessment developed by ACTFL and administered through Language Testing International (LTI). The AAPPL measures students' ability to communicate in Spanish through listening, speaking, reading, and writing in authentic, real-world situations.
Participation in the AAPPL provides students and families with valuable information about their Spanish language proficiency and growth. Results can help inform high school course placement and support students in planning a pathway toward earning the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation by identifying the language proficiency they have already achieved and the coursework needed to continue developing their bilingual skills.
